Beauty Queen Curls

After 25 years as a professional hairstylist in pageantry, Laura knows a thing or two about curling hair. You asked she heard, and we have Laura's Pro-Tips on curling your hair.

If you have ever had trouble getting a curl to set right, there is a big chance you didn't start with your hair in the ideal condition. Make sure your hair is clean and dry! Excess oils in your hair will block you from a mane of coiled perfection. The exception being, a good quality heat protectant and curl setting spray.

  1. Start by sectioning off your hair into and upper and lower segments. Clip the upper part to your the top of your head, and begin with the bottom section.

  2. Grab a smaller section of hair from the front. If you are using a curling iron with a clamp, you will want to have it open. Take that section of hair and wrap it once around the barrel of your iron. Close the clamp enough that you get a little resistance from your hair as you slide it down towards the end of the section. If you are using the clamp, get the end of your hair with in the clamp to avoid having a kink at the bottom of your curl.

  3. Spinning your curls away from your face, roll your hair onto the iron from the bottom up. Keeping the wand as vertical as possible.

  4. Keep your hair on the iron for about 10 seconds. Then gently release your newly coiled lock.   Repeat this around your bottom and top layers of your hair.

  5. To loosen your curls, gently run your fingers through your hair.

  6. Use a mega-hold hairspray all over your hair. Hold the spray at least a foot away, applying in light layers.
